Jose Gonzalez

How many times has someone told you a musician "sounds like Nick Drake and Elliott Smith?" Probably ten people for every local guitar guy that plays an open mic night. In reality, how many of these artists actually deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the greats? Not too many. Well, enter Jose Gonzalez.

Jose is an interesting story. He's from Sweden by way of Argentina (his folks at least), yet he sings in English. His style is emotional, powerful finger picked sparse songs combined with hushed vocals. He at times channels Nick Drake, but he doesn't fall into the category of artists that try to sound like Nick. He's a truly gifted songwriter.

He also has the ability to cover a song and completely own it. In the same way Sam Beam covered Such Great Heights, Jose reworked the quirky electro track, Heartbeats into a subtle folk track. He also made Kylie Minogue listenable!

His debut album, Veneer is a fantastic work. Check out a few songs, and prepare to become a huge fan:
