Josh Rouse, Rocky V. & contest updates
This weekend in Vancouver, Josh Rouse brings his brand of acoustic goodness to the Red Room. This tour has been a bit unique, in that he’s be touring by himself and randomly hiring string quartets to fill out his sound. Not feeling that? Well check out this set on The Morning Becomes Eclectic and you will hear how great it sounds.
Josh’s new album has been getting mixed reviews – good from herohill and stereogum, bad from Pitchfork. Bad reviews from Pitchfork are becoming the norm, so I wonder if people even care about the scores anymore. It’s like hearing Ebert gave two thumbs up to a film.
The opening act has been changing in most cities as well. Seattle gets Mr. Roderick from The Long Winters doing an acoustic set. We do not, but we do get Rocky Votolato. Rocky’s not just a kickass name. He’s got the Apollo Creed-entials to make you show up early. Hints of Simon and the Garfunk, and earthy hitchhiker-esque acoustic songs that sound beautiful are his MO. His latest album, Makers, is available on Barsuk records. Here are some MP3’s:
MP3:: White Daisy Passing
MP3::Portland is Leaving
It’s also end-of the-contest time at the Hill.
