We're back.. back again (with La Rocca)

Seems we crashed the party and brought too many guests, so the hosts kicked us out. It's the first time we used up our bandwidth (except when we wrote a about the dude with the homemade swords) so we are kind of hyped.

But, let's get back to the music. Last week we interviewed Chris from Silversun Pickups - who are playing in Vancouver on July 30th. We talked about the Ship collective and how great the boys from La Rocca are.

Originally I passed on the EP, after hearing "Irish guys trying to sound like U2" tag being kicked around the net like a hackeysack at the beach. To me, that is a recipe for disaster, but I recently upwrapped a fresh copy of "The Truth (due out August 8th on Dangerbird)" and gave it a listen and was very impressed. First off, to me at least, these guys sound nothing like U2. They do sound catchy as hell, and I can really hear the strength of producer Tony Hoffer (Supergrass, Belle and Sebastian, the Kinks) shining through.

The album starts with the upbeat sketches (20 something life) which was on their debut Sing, Song, Sung EP. Behind Bjorn Baillie's whiskey-strained voice, you hear keyboard, xylophone and the sing-along chorus compliment a nice acoustic riff. You can tell this band is going to produce a few big singles over the course of their career.

It's hard not to fall into stereotypes when describing this band. Irish pub rock with drunken nostalgia. At times you feel the emotion of the Walkmen, but at times you hear the influence of Van Morrison (the sing/shouted chrous vocals) and other times you hear the influence of more radio friendly outfits like the Sterophonics. I also hear some Springsteen on Eyes Wide Open, but I don't think La Rocca is trying to cite these influences to get ahead. These guys seem to love the music they are playing, as well as music in general. So can you really judge someone for playing the music they love? I don't think so, especially when they write catchy tracks like Cats and Capitol Pill.

So I guess I'll leave it as this. La Rocca - the next band to make a lot of fans while being ripped apart by hipsters despite the fact they actually like the CD.
