Silversun Pickups, Ladyhawk and Magnolia Electric Co

Another great show is rolling into Vancouver in a fortnight. Herohill has been pimping love for Dangerbird records artists The Silversun Pickups for a long time. They are opening up headliner, Magnolia Electric Co. and local band made good, Ladyhawk, and I think their Smashing Pumpkins/MBV, heavy pedalled soundswill be a perfect kick-start to the classic rock influenced lineup.

MEC is about to make Ryan Adams look like a slacking teenager. Jason recorded 6… yes 6… albums and all are going to be released over the next two years. Fans might remember Jason’s other band, Songs: Ohia but this release is a solo project, and the instrumentation change is quite substantial. Most of the album (Let Me Go, Let Me Go, Let Me Go) is entirely acoustic. Don’t worry, Jason and crew are not ditching the heavy sounds and Crazyhorse vibe that they are known for, but rather experimenting with new sounds and techniques. The other albums were recorded with assistance from Steve Albini and Dave Lowery of Cracker fame. It’s going to be a big couple years for this already prolific artist.

Keeping with the heavy sounds, Vancouver’s own Ladyhawk is also on this bill. Their debut self-titled album is finally out on Jagjaguwar records and it is a great album. Already drawing praise, the album channels J Mascis and Neil Young, but doesn’t get stuck in one style. Ranging from uptempo rockers to slow power ballads (like the fantastic Sad Eyes/Blue Eyes), the band shows diversity and unlimited promise. You can’t help but see the influence of labelmates, Okkervil River, but trust me, this album is not a reproduction of other great artists. It’s refreshing and will get people back into rock.
