Between the Covers:: Bowie vs. Get Up Kids ... and more!

Well, normally it's one and done for the Between the Covers series, but today I'm giving you a double dose. I was going to throw on a nice Bowie cover by the Get Up Kids, since we have a little mini interview with Matt Pryor coming this week, but last night we watched History Boys, which actually had a stellar collection of songs. Therefore, you get a little Deathcab doing the Smiths.

MP3:: Suffragette City - David Bowie
Admittedly, one of my least fav Bowie songs, but still... it's Bowie. The guitar riff is classic and it's hard not to tap/sing along with him. Not much else needs to be said.

MP3:: Suffragette City- Get Up Kids
This was originally for some 80's comp, and they do add a little bit more edge to the track, but keep it pretty clean. The keys seem to boom a bit more which is nice and they do an admirable job replicating the big guitar solo.

Overall - anytime Bowie is involved, you lose. So there you go. Bowie is the victor.

MP3:: This Charming Man - The Smiths
This is one of those songs that everyone likes. Seriously. Lots of bands cover it (the Stars for one) and very few can do the Moz and Marr justice. It's easily one of the most recognizable 80's tracks going, and white people have danced awkwardly to it for years (I won't even mention drunken people at 80's night trying to copy his little scream at the 2-minute mark, but doing it on the wrong verse) . True story, when I got mugged this is the song that when I turned on my car. Good times.

MP3:: This Charming Man - Deathcab for Cutie
This cover was on the LP, You Can Play These Songs With Chords + 10. I actually like the energy and chaos they bring to this song. It was rough and unpolished, but still held the melody. The heavy guitar chorus adds a new twist to the sing. It's hard to hear this song and picture Ben and the boys becoming the pop machine they are today.

But again, you can't beat the Moz. Seriously, it's like fighting a UK, white, asexual Marvin Hagler in his day, so DCFC took it on the chin. Victory, hands down = The Smiths.

I concur, Moz version much better!
