Sunday Morning Coffee:: You Say Party! We Say Die!

After last week's fitting addition to the category, I'll follow it up with the type of music that makes you feel like you had a jug of coffee, and nine Red Bulls. You Say Party! We Say Die! is a fantastic dance/thrash/punk band heavy on political thoughts and dancing (but to be fair, the pic has a coffee cup in it).

This 5-piece is led by the energy laced vocals of Becky Ninkovic, but the keyboards are rock solid, and you literally can't sit still when the band starts giving 'er. So why would I want to play this so early on a Sunday? Well, my Steelers have a chance to go 3-0 for the first time in forever, so I'm more than a bit excited.

Anyway - the band. YSP!WSD! is what is great about Canadian music. They've signed with Paper Bag records, a label that is helping Canadian outfits form an identity within the indie community (Tokyo Police Club, The Acorn both live here), and in a weird way, their sound is very Canadian. Political tinges, coupled with spastic flourishes and breakdowns giving you time to think - all wrapped up in a package that makes you want to rush the dance floor. If that doesn't some up my university days, nothing does.

Unlike so many bands trying to standout making the same style music, YSP!WSD! exhibits a soft, sensitive side that makes you respect them even more. If it wasn't for a border crossing issue, this band would be the biggest export from Vancouver (other than our pot). Most people have already heard their fantastic debut on Paper Bag - Lose All Time - but if you haven't, do yourself a favor and stream it here. It's full of energy, but the band always delved into some more mature and 80's tinged sounds. It's a keeper for sure.
