News:: It's Nova Scotia Music Week

Unless you happen to be a fellow resident of Canada's Ocean Playground (and yes, that is our slogan, it's on our license plates), you might not know it's Nova Scotia Music Week. This is a weeklong event covering all things musical and Nova Scotian put on every year, appropriately enough, by Music Nova Scotia. Unfortunately the hill couldn't make it down to lovely Liverpool this weekend to take in any of the festivities, and although I meant to, I wasn't wasn't able to find time this week to mention any of the events. Better late than never though, so I thought I'd run down some of the nominees for the Nova Scotia Music Awards, which close the event on sunday night.

The full list of nominees can be found here, so I'm not going to go through every category, just some of the ones which feature a number of artists we've covered here on the hill:

Pop Rock Artist/Recording Of The Year
Dog Day - Night Group
Alert The Medic - Self Titled
In-Flight Safety - Coast Is Clear
Joel Plaskett Emergency - Ashtray Rock
The Contact - Canvas Tears

The Hill's Take: In-Flight Safety's album seems like it's been out for years now, so I can't give them the nod even though that's probably unfair. I really like Dog Day's album, but I think I'd have to go with Ashtray Rock. All Halifax West related bias aside, it really is a great album.

Urban Artist/Recording Of The Year
J-Bru - Identity Crisis
Markit - Mark My Words
Jordan Croucher - No Dress Code
Classified - Hitch Hikin' Music
Spesh K - Media Coverage

The Hill's Take: This is a tough call. I think the thing that stands out to me going over the list is the quality of these releases. I reviewed 4 of the 5, and can say honestly that they're all good. Like In-Flight Safety in the last category, I'm gonna pass on Classified's album just because it's been out so long. I'll give Markit the nod for his debut album which was a thoughtful, well put together album.

Alternative Artist/Recording Of The Year
Dog Day - Night Group
The Superfantastics - Pop Up Book
In-Flight Safety - Coast Is Clear
The Jimmy Swift band - Weight Of The World
Rebekah Higgs - Rebekah Higgs

The Hill's Take: Another tough call, as it's almost too close to call between Dog Day & The Superfantastics. If I were forced to choose I'd go with the SF's I think. Pop Up Book was great and they were tighter than ever at their Pop Explosion show, so they get the nod.

New Artist/Recording Of The Year
The Superfantastics - Pop Up Book
Rebekah Higgs - Rebekah Higgs
Jordan Croucher - No Dress Code
Ryan Cook - Sunny Acres
Rose Cousins - If You Were For Me

The Hill's Take: Probably unfair as we only reviewed one of nominees, but I'm giving another deserved nod to The SF's

Video Of The Year
Turn Around - The Jimmy Swift Band
Coast Is Clear - In-Flight Safety
Fashionable People - Joel Plaskett Emergency
Hard To Be Hip Hop - Classified f. Maestro
When The Angels Make Contact - Matt Mays

The Hill's Take: As much as I enjoyed Buck 65's cameo as Zoltar in the Matt Mays video, this one is essentially no contest. Any video that features the godfather of Canadian rap is going to win 99% of the time in my book, so Hard To Be Hip Hop it is then.

Female Artist/Recording Of The Year
Ruth Minnikin - Folk Art
Amelia Curran - War Brides
Jill Barber - For All Time
Rebekah Higgs - Rebekah Higgs
Rose Cousins - If You Were For Me
Jenn Grant - Orchestra For The Moon

The Hill's Take: Another one where I'm probably not super-qualified to pick, but this is Jenn Grant's only nomination, which doesn't seem right. Orchestra For The Moon was one of my favorite albums this year, so Jenn gets the nod here

Socan Songwriter of The Year
David Myles
Matt Mays
Rose Cousins
Jill Barber
Joel Plaskett Emergency - Ashtray Rock
Classified - Hitch Hikin' Music

The Hill's Take: This is tough, and surely I'm not the man to make this call. There's really some great songwriters here, but I'd go with David Myles. The songs on Things have Changed are so engaging and varied that it makes for a fantastic listen.

Album of The year
In-Flight Safety - Coast Is Clear
Jill Barber
Joel Plaskett Emergency - Ashtray Rock
Classified - Hitch Hikin' Music
Matt Mays

The Hill's Take: Hmmm, I think I'd have to go with Joel and Ashtray Rock here. It made a ton of noise nationally, and as I said, it's really a great album. I'd say Classified's album would be a fairly close second as he was another guy that was everywhere this year, and Hitch Hikin' Music is a really enjoyable album.

Who doesn't enjoy a good awards rundown? Plus it was a good chance to re-cap some of the excellent NS releases of the past year. If you aren't familiar with some of these albums, I'd suggest you check them out.

MP3:: Jenn Grant - White Horses

MP3:: Classified - Hard To Be Hip Hop f. Maestro Fresh Wes
