Quick-hitters:: Rebels United

Saved By Vinyl sent me their latest release, new EP by a band called Rebels United. I will quite easily admit I had no idea what this project was about, and even after a few listens, I'm still not so sure. Rebels United is two people: Lorrie Matheson - a music vet who has worked with countless acts in the Calgary scene - and lyricist, Penn Poutanen.
Here's where it gets a bit weird for people (myself included). Penn is a 7-year old boy with "a love of George Lucas films and Danish building blocks." Lorrie writes the music to accompany Penn's thoughts and they are pretty well what you'd expect from a kid. Autobots has him shouting a bit over Lorrie's old school electro beats and Sharky is a simple track about Penn loving a shark and the shark loving him (over a nice, rootsy jangle). The Rebels is a Star Wars track that showcases Penn's spoken word raps and sound effects over a blippy beat.
This isn't one of those - My Kid Could Paint That - type things. I am not pushing Penn into the genius realm and thinking these songs make sliced bread feel like a plain ole loaf. I just like the idea, was open to the music and picturing these two in the studio makes me chuckle. It also makes me happy to think that not every little kid is stuck at home playing Guitar hero instead of trying to become an actual musician.
