Re-Reviews:: The Clips Matterhorn

web site

Keeping with the Vancouver theme, it's great to see The Clips fantastic record - Matterhorn - getting a re-release. The Vancouver band is like a musical gumbo; a hearty mix of ingredients that leaves you full, happy and glistening with beads of sweat from the heat. I am not sure if that made any sense, but The Clips make even the tightest of tight pantsed, American Apparel wearing sad sack want to freak out awkwardly on the dance floor.

Before you get hyper sniper, no, they aren't an electro band (although Second Hand Deal crackles and they do rip some nice synth action) or another mashup artist. The drums are real and with a mix of Brit Pop, blues and free jazz, Matterhorn has stood the test of time. When it came out in 2007, it was hard to put it into context. The band already had a fan base, played all over Vancouver and the chops to be as big as some of the bands whose best material managed to escape the tightly knit, protective confines of the Vancouver scene.

Now, almost a year later The Clips might finally get their chance.

Signing with Unfamiliar and getting some distribution will get the songs heard, and when people stumble upon heavy hitters like the spacey, dance floor stomper Kassel, it's going to be hard to turn Matterhorn off. I've been listening to the song (the whole record really) for a long time and I still get a bit goosebumpy when Edo hits the falsetto on the breakdown.

And that's just it; almost any music fan will find those personal moments in so many different tracks.

It's hard to pick a favorite from this record, because the songs all have subtleties that seep into your brain. The driving drums and Thom Yorke meander Edo's voice travels on the 6+ minute epic Wire, the poppy synth of Eyesuck, the video game + marching band intro of Missing Plan or the strangely out-of-place, super heavy guitar lick of Spacekidz will all attract listeners, but it's when you take in the whole package that you really appreciate what the Clips bring to the table.
