Sunday Morning Coffee:: The Just Barelys

web site :: myspace
Friday night - as you will probably read more about later - was a nice night of music here in Halifax. Bloodsport, The Hopsital Grade and The Memories Attack all graced the stage at the Seahorse. But for me, the highlight was catching The Just Barelys.

I don't know if I have a favorite band in Halifax, but The JBs certainly jumped high on that non-existent list. This Halifax two-piece has been around forever - Stephen Kelly started writing songs under the moniker back in 2000 - but he and drummer Eleanor King are really hitting their stride.

On record, their quirky songs are filled with instruments (keys, drums, banjo, guitar, bass) but Friday it was just guitar and drums. The songs were up beat - King's drumming and harmonies really added some depth to Kelly's songs, and the energy between them crackled. They played a lot of new songs - hopefully that means they are heading into the studio soon - and some classics like (S)kills and Raising Kids. Be on the look out for these two.
