Sunday Morning Coffee:: Mississippi Kings

When the Mississippi Kings first reached out to us, I listened to a couple of songs on the 'ole myspace and quickly type cast them as another sleepy, soul-tinged, back porch outfit that I would enjoy.
For some reason, that description seemed to fit the sounds I'd expect to come out of Hamilton; a gritty, steel city where time can often knock the strength from your legs. So when they sent over their new single - Sailing on the Ocean - yesterday, I assumed it would follow suit.
Instead, the Kings revealed another (and more accurate) side of their song writing; one full of horns and feel good country soul. From the opening notes, this song knocks it out of the box. The energy is high and the band creates an engaging, but solid structure to let Cino's vocals explore the track. It's got enough Motown to earn a listen, but enough straight up country soul to keep you coming back, knowing the band is on to something good.
Honestly, if the rest of the album lives up to the potential, this Hammer based band is going to be a name you will hear about on more blogs than this one. Essentially, if summer is still happening in your neck of the woods, this song should start sound tracking long drives to nowhere and long nights on the back porch with friends.
