Word on the Beat:: Oldfolks Home vs Broken Social Scene

It's been far too long since we asked any of the artists we cover for free shit. Word on the Beat was a way for us to get artists talking about artists that influence their music (and get cool content for the hill), but we kind of forgot about it for way too long. Long story short - it's back and for any of you bored musicians, all submissions are welcome.

When I was talking to Ricardo from Oldfolks Home, he mentioned he had new gear he wanted to try out, so I politely requested he track a cover for our Word on the Beat section. In a nice tie in, he picked a Canadian band and a jam most people who read blogs love. Broken Social Scene is basically the bees knees when it comes to Can-indy rock and Cause = Time is probably their signature song.

Ricardo takes a different approach, stripping it down to the basics, letting the lyrics, guitar and emotion carry the track. On first you listen, you might be waiting for the harmonies, heavy guitar work and synthy static, but I'm 100% feeling Ricardo's version.

Which works for you?

And remember - you can pick up Ricardo's solid release, We Are The Feeding Line (review) and check him out when he plays in Halifax – and one would assume a cameo by Higgs – on November 15th @ Gus’ Pub.
