Quick hitters:: Owl

It’s a beautiful, snowy day here in Halifax; the kind of day where you want to bundle up in scarves, mitts, hats, and winter coats and run around catching snowflakes on your tongue. And as I sit here listening to Owl, the new duo of Superfantastic (that's a band and an adjective) Matthew MacDonald and Vanessa Murnaghan, that unashamed freedom runs throughout their songs.

Sure, on some tracks you get the impression that Owls might be better suited to soundtrack your late night candlelit discussions - case in point, how effortlessly they succeed in transforming the Death Cab classic, Passenger Seat, by stripping out the piano and replacing it with guitar, a nice electro current and Vanessa’s double tracked voice - but it's the more upbeat tracks like Sandi and Goodbye Bye are the ones that make an impression on me.

Instead of creating typical, down tempo melancholy full of intricate programming and whiny vocals, Owl warms their songs with Vanessa’s voice and Matthew’s more organic programming touch. Over time, the songs start to pound like a heartbeat and Vanessa's characters start to come to life in a Casiotone For The Painfully Alone type manner. The band is just getting out of the starting gate, but the songs already show tons of potential and I've left them playing in a loop most of the afternoon.
