Quick hitters: tUnE-YaRdS

myspace :: buy record

Every year when we solicit the "Best-of" records from the artists on our Best-of list, we stumble on a few acts that we had yet to discover. This year, well, we got about 90% of them to be honest, but one that was mentioned a few times and was new to us was the lovely ukulele sounds of tUnE-YaRdS.

tUnE-YaRdS is really just one woman, Montreal's Merrill Garbus, but her sound is much more than the sum of its parts. Some yelps, screams and moans over a few ukulele strums shouldn’t be able to stir the spirit, but somehow it does. The static filled drum claps that grabs your ear or the island infused vibe that floats along weightlessly shouldn’t come from such a small package and engross you so easily, but somehow it does. It should take more than a digital voice recorder and Audacity to come up with songs this enjoyable… but somehow it doesn’t.
