Morning Mailbag:: J. Tillman, Kelly Joe Phelps & The Mississippi Kings

Nic and I have been going crazy with the home repairs and renos these days, so some of the things that float into my inbox are getting left to marinate for a bit longer.

First and foremost, J Tillman has put out a little video for the first single on VACILANDO TERRITORY BLUES. Firstborn is classic Tillman, a slow burner with an intensity you wouldn't expect from a man that rarely gets above a whisper, but it's the reverb, keys and ooohs that just melt me every time I hear them.

In some other great news, Kelly Joe Phelps is playing a show here in Halifax at the Carleton on March 22nd. Kelly's no stranger to the road, but he's making the trek here as part of the CD release tour for his new record, Western Bell.

The Carleton has absolutely terrific sound, comfy seats and a nice wine list so I can't recommend the venue enough and the emotional guitar Phelps plays is the perfect after dinner mint so to speak. You might want to show up early, because Matthew Barber is opening up the evening so it should be a night to remember.

For a sneak preview of the new record, check out the beautiful sounds of the title track.

Ontario's The Mississippi Kings - a band we've talked about before - are offering up a free single on their web site. They took some time to record the Marvin Gaye classic, What's Going On, and while no one can match Marvin's vocals it's obvious the Kings put their heart into this recording.

The harmonies sound nice and I like that they paid respects to the song, but still managed to take a bit of a risk by giving it an almost AM radio feel.
