Five Funky Stories:: You Say Party! We Say Die!

Today marks the start of the 2009 Halifax Pop Explosion, and that, as you know, means go time. But some time ago, the Ack and I, as we are wont to do when the HPX schedule comes out each year, began discussing this year's lineup to pick out the things we wanted to attend, and one thing was abundantly clear: Saturday night's Paragon show was a must-do. Japandroids, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Zeus and Little Girls is a killer lineup no matter how you slice it, and so we were delighted that YSPWSD took some time out to face our question machine.

And not just one YSPWSD-er, but two. I have to say, YSPWSD's new album, XXXX, is fantastic. My introduction to the band was their last full-length Lose All Time, but for whatever reason it didn't make the impact on me that XXXX has. My memory of YSPYSD was I a lot more scream-y and dance rocky, but this new album is melodically awesome in my book, while still having an edge. I've listened to it repeatedly over the last couple weeks, and it's made me think I should go back and re-acquaint myself with their previous work. It's also made me think that Saturday night is indeed going to be awesome.

You want to know something else that's going to be awesome? Halloween at the LaHave Bakery in LaHave, Nova Scotia. Why you ask? Well not only because it's a bakery, and I have to assume that they will have some tasty Halloween snacks there, but also because YSPWSD is playing a secret "Fright Night" show there with former Dog Day-er KC Spidle's new band Bad Vibrations and The Dread (the show may or may not be associated with LaHave's Homegrown Skateboards. Did everyone else know there was a skateboard company in LaHave? Awesome stuff - grade 8 me would soil his Bones Brigade jogging pants upon hearing that news).

But it's HPX we're concerned with right now, so let's get to the Q&A with Derek and Stephen (I love this installment by the way - in case you doubted the smarts of our question machine, it shows its worth by somehow asking Stephen, who is currently banned from entering the US if he would move there. Stephen also makes a Vitamin "O" reference, which is greazy local slang for Oland's, and that is awesome):

1. If you had to cover one Country song, what would it be?

"Chattahoochie" because I was already forced to learn the words in grade seven music class.

2. Name a Canadian band (past or present) that should be bigger outside this country.

SNFU! The greatest Canadian band of all-time.

3. If forced to cover one hip hop song, what would it be?

Forced? What the hell is wrong with hip-hop? I don't like how this is worded.

4. Mr. Dressup or The Friendly Giant? (or neither because you're too young and have no idea who they are)

They were both pretty cool, but I'm giving this one to Dressup.

5. What is your favorite venue to play (excluding those in your city of residence)

The Royal Albert, Winnipeg. (Cobalt East)

Look up! Look WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY up! @ THE FRIENDLY GIANT! That dude was the best, and so sensitive!

3. Would you move to the US if it you knew it would further your career?

only 2 more years until i'm not banned from the USA

4. We might invite you to play the fictional Hillfest, what will be on your rider?
