Valentines Day:: Laurent Bourque & Ruby Attwood

When I hear Montreal based singer song writer Laurent Bourque sing to all the beautiful girls, I can't help but Bourque isn't yet another singer/song writer that wants to bombard you with song after song about the one that got away. Over a Josh Rouse-esque, smile inducing melody, you feel like he's waiting to find that special someone.

More importantly, Bourque lets the songs on his new record - What We Talk About - move freely across his most creative thoughts. Sure he can pen a summery hit, but he's not afraid to add a bit of muscle or emotion to the mix. When I first listened to the record, I thought at times he would fit alongside Amos the Transparent nicely, so it was a nice surprise to learn that Mr. Chandler added some vocal support to the affair.

I'm not sure if Laurent is quite ready to make the jump from good to great, but What We Talk About certainly offers a glimpse at the potential he has to offer.

Normally, Laurent would be the only person in this post, but I got a video in the mail today that just needs to be seen. Ruby Attwood of My People Sleeping - read our review of Feye here - "just kind of got into valentines day this year, and wanted to share!" She wrote the song, Sparrow was written for her boyfriend (and band mate) John Ancheta. You can download it from on Tears for the Years, but the stripped down keyboard number reminds you that love is more than just cards, chocolates and material gifts.

The crispness of the video hits home, especially when Ruby is singing outside and the cold breath floats skyward. It almost feels like a La Blogotheque session, just with a bit more depth and video arc. Not sure you will find a more enjoyable free video to settle in with on this Valentine's Day.
