Concert update:: David Gray & Royal Wood @ The Metro Centre

I doubt even the most devout David Gray fan would have expected the man to book a cross-country tour that included a stop in Halifax (especially since it’s been about 10 years since the world fell in love with that jam, Babylon). But despite the success that single (and record really) provided, Gray has always been more of a grinder than a man concerned with #1 singles so an understated tour across Canada to promote his latest record makes sense.

In a smart move, Gray grabbed the always snappily dressed Toronto piano maestro Royal Wood and brought him along to warm up the crowd. While we’ve always been Royal fans here at the hill, picturing his material rippling through our city’s biggest venue is a bit puzzling. His piano ballads were better suited for the comfy confines of the Cohn or maybe the Company House, but one listen to On Top of Your Love from his upcoming record - The Waiting - shows Royal reaching for the rafters. The song sounds huge in comparison to his previous output (it makes some of his bigger songs (like A Mirror Without seems like hushed confessionals).

On Top of Your Love uses a heavier drum beat, well placed muscular guitar work and piano to drive the song forward with a confidence I can’t remember hearing from the chamber pop vet. The song gains momentum and by the time Wood offers a warped synth followed by the single piano/harmonies breakdown, I can’t help but picture this song blasting through our converted hockey rink to a bigger crowd than I think Royal thought he’d be in front of, with everyone singing along happily.
