Quick Hitters:: Bishop Morocco

Have you ever had a friend that no matter the distance or situation between you, each sporadic conversation was as fluid and rewarding as if you had seem each other every day for decades? As hard as that dynamic is to find in everyday conversation, that kind of musical synergy is even harder to bottle. As we grow old and grow apart, our tastes shift radically and the simple fact that Jake Fairley and James Sayce can agree on melody and influence is impressive. Writing a single that grows from two unique perspectives and will appeal to almost any listener is a feat of epic magnitude.

The duo, known as Bishop Morocco, is a melting pot of styles, influence and experiences that they two men have had over the last decade. Last Year’s Disco Guitars - the new free single out on Hand Drawn Dracula - is heavy on nostalgic, 80′s melancholic bliss as familiar and enjoyable as a Brat Pack flick, but it’s the subtle, seamless weaving of each individual’s personality that makes this song more than another new wave-ish, retread. Fairley’s electronics crackle and the swirling atmospherics float you along the melody, but the duo uses strong structure, a plucky bass line and shimmering guitars to build an enjoyable organic layer on top of the programmed foundation.

Amazingly enough, Graham Walsh’s remix on the b-side is just as invigorating. It goes without saying the boys from Holy Fuck can meld emotion into any song, but his meticulous, respectful reconstruction shows why indie bands should be lining up outside his Toronto apartment with tracks (and cheque books) in hand.
