R.I.P. Guru

This is a tough one. Considering its relatively short history, hip hop has lost more than its fair share of luminaries well before their time should’ve been up. But seeing Guru pass at 43, that really hits home for me. Quite simply, I love Gang Starr. Back in the day, MC/DJ duos were the dominant configuration for a hip hop entity, and there were few better than Guru and DJ Premier. Premo’s contributions are well known, but Guru can’t be discounted in the pairing, as his voice is famous throughout hip hop, and although never complex, his lyrics were always memorable.

There’s no doubt that Guru’s place in hip hop history is assured, but it’s kind of sad to see the apparent mess the latter part of his career devolved into. After he & Premo split, Guru took up with some producer dude named Solar, and this guy appeared to have some kind of Svengali-like hold over Guru which has culminated with him taking control of Guru’s affairs since he fell ill - and even, it seems, going so far as to write Guru’s farewell letter, which asserts that Solar runs everything and that Guru’s “ex-DJ” should not be involved in any way. That’s going over as well as one would expect, and unfortunately it’s making a sad situation even sadder.

But let’s put that aside and remember Guru in his prime. Rest in peace to Mr. Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal.

Definitely a sad week for hip-hop fans. And that letter business is bizarre to say the least.
