Introducing:: Master Chef

Stumbling onto Master Chef, a super lo-fi, noise duo from East Van, wasn’t as easy as it should have been. Considering the musicians involved are major players in two herohill favs - Adrian from Apollo Ghosts and Alex from Dirty Beaches - even a quick scan of their respective myspaces reveals nary a mention of their latest endeavor.

An understated origin isn’t all that surprising I guess, considering that Alex’s output as Dirty Beaches was more of a sound collage from the perspective of a alienated traveler and those same sounds help shape the first output the band offers up. The songs weren’t about being noticed, they were about moving through foreign towns unnoticed, soaking up the energy and culture. When you listen to Master Chef, you still get that same feeling, but the energy Adrian adds starts to give you the confidence to go deeper into the city. As the pulse of the songs take over, you start to feel alive.

Desert AM Radio is a moody, noise filled slow mover that uses some guitar shlonks and fret board squeaks to sharply contrast the lo-fi tapestry Alex builds, but the static and electric guitar surge that surfaces halfway through the 5-minute effort transforms this relaxing song into a much more intense track. Alex and Adrian have developed an instant report; both know when to take the lead and when to settle into the supporting role. The chaotic Boat Ride Home sounds like it could have been an less formed demo from Mount Benson, but still holds true to the style and production that you expect from Dirty Beaches. They manage to create a serene calm that is constantly moving and changing, but the duo still piques your interest with the nervous excitement you feel when you step out of your comfort zone. I haven’t heard the full record, but when the guitars and textures roll over each other and the ramshackle percussion infuses life into Breakfast at Sea, I was hooked.
