News: BRAIDS releasing record, touring

Sometimes things come together in a perfect way. Yesterday, I was glued to the screen watching my squad (go Spurs!) fight for the last Champions league qualifying spot. Although they didn’t have their “A” game so to speak, they were lethal on set pieces, which corresponded perfectly to me getting an email talking about new music and shows from Calgary born, Montreal based BRAIDS.

Their 2008 EP - Set Pieces - was one that I missed on first release, but when I finally took the time to listen, I fell hard. On each of the five songs, the quartet showed patience, whimsy, a love of experimentation and above all, talent. Foolishly, I assumed that the songs would speak for themselves, but sadly the understated band became one of those bands that other bands love.

I think that’s going to change with the upcoming release of Native Speaker. In an age where bands release three records a year and flood the mp3 channels with remixes and mash-ups, waiting almost two years for a follow up seems like career suicide. In reality though, BRAIDS has taken the time to build a beautiful collection of songs that reveal themselves slowly and powerfully, realizing the potential that stopped you in your tracks.

I’ll hold off on a full review, but with BRAIDS touring the country - and even though it’s not on their list yet, I’ve heard rumblings of an East Coast tour this summer - I thought I’d give all our listeners a chance to hear some new sounds, or at least a new version of an old song. If you live anywhere in Canada, you have no excuse to miss them.
