Old School Mondays:: NWA’s Posse Edition

It’s a holiday Monday here in Halifax, so I wasn’t planning on posting an OSM, but I had an idea, and some time last night, so I figured I might as well put up a little something for you folks that don’t have today off. So let’s get right to it.

Easily one of the best things I’ve read in the last few weeks, is this LA Weekly article in which they track down every single person in the cover photo for NWA’s “debut” album (really a compilation of Dre-produced tracks billed as an NWA album), NWA and the Posse, and find out what happened to them since that photo was taken. The whole article is awesome, if you like that kind of thing, and I certainly do, especially where hip hop is concerned. I had to laugh when I realized Candyman was on the cover of this album, I just moved, and I found a Candyman tape in one of my boxes, so reading this about him was comical:

: If anyone caught a break because of his place on the Posse record cover, it’s Candyman. A classmate of Ice Cube during his time at Washington Preparatory, he was unaffiliated with the group at the time.

Candyman has said the cover represents the group at its realest, before the development of the styles commonly associated with gangsta rap. Arabian Prince disagrees. “Candyman got lucky,” he says. “At the time, honestly, we used to actually get mad at Candyman because we’d be out on tour and we’d come back in town and sometimes he’d be representing N.W.A and we were like, ‘Eh, eh, eh, you’re not actually in the group. You’re on the cover but … “

“Candyman always kinda thought his shit didn’t stink,” says one of the other guys from the cover. “He’s still that way.”

hahaha, everyone hates Candyman….I smell a sitcom! I also love that one dude is rocking the same Adidas windsurfing shirt (white hat jheri curls and a huge clock around his neck) I had in grade 7. Anyway, it’s fun stuff - I mean I feel a little bad and here’s some Posse-related jams to go with it. Enjoy.
