It’s an old-school Can-rap bonanza! I know this one is late, but it couldn’t be helped due to some moving-related technical issues. It couldn’t be skipped though, because hill-alumnus Mario “Mr.E” Eleftheros is currently stuck at home convalescing after knee surgery, and he requested a specific song for this week’s OSM. That song you ask? Well it just so happens to be Mr. Metro by Devon.
Who the ass is Devon? That’s what I imagine a good many of you are asking right now. I’ve said this before in regards to other folks, but If you’re over 30 and Canadian, then you likely know who Devon is. Devon is Devon Martin, a Toronto musician that wrote Mr. Metro in response to some excessive force and harassment incidents involving the T.O. police in the late 90′s. I don’t think Devon really viewed himself as a rapper (here he is doing Superstition, which seems more his speed really), but conscious, PE-style hip hop was rather big at the time, and it probably made sense to get his message out in a way that the kids would be into. I dare say it worked, as Mr. Metro was one of the first Canadian rap videos I remember getting regular play on Muchmusic back in the day, and even though it was borderline cheese, Devon’s addictive, sing-sung chorus made the song pretty memorable.
Devon put out an album after Mr. Metro made a little noise for him, and so I’ve put the request out there a couple times for anyone that has a copy to shoot the mp3 for Mr. Metro my way. It hasn’t worked thus far, not that many folks are jamming to Devon in their iPods these days I guess, and so I’ve taken matters into my own hands and ripped it from the video below. Hence the subpar quality, but beggers, choosers, etc and so on.
But what to post with it? It certainly called for some additional Canadian hip hop goodness, and thanks to the dudes at living underwater, I’m able to put up a song I’ve wanted to find for a while: HDV’s Pimp of the Microphone. HDV is now the LA-based Jacky Jasper, but back in the day he was a Canadian hip hop pioneer, kind of the raspy-voiced Ice-T of Toronto’s fledgling rap scene. I don’t want to say we didn’t take HDV seriously, but really, we didn’t take him seriously. His songs were on Rapcity plenty though, so his “P-I-M-P pimp…..OF THE MICROPHONE” chorus eventually became lodged in my head and it’s fun to hear it again.
And to wrap things up, a little Conducting Thangs, because I’m pretty sure it was one of Mario’s favorites, and we need something from the Godfather of Canadian hip hop. As a little bonus, here’s Another Funky Break (From My Pap’s Crate), which was on The Maestro Zone, which was the name put on the American version of Maestro’s second album The Black Tie Affair - oh those wacky Yanks! Anyway, it’s a solid tune, so enjoy. And get back in action soon Mr. E.
