The Acorn - No Ghost

Without question, Ottawa’s most well known folksters have a tough road ahead of them with today’s release of No Ghost. Following a critically acclaimed disc is never easy, but following one built from such a tight focus and unique story is damn near impossible.

When the band created a collection of songs born from the life of Rolf Klausener’s mother, the narrative and emotions were revealed over tribal drumming, picked guitar, marimbas, and ukuleles built to represent her Honduran roots. It was immediate, beautiful and heart warming; a touching look at a journey to which most of us can’t relate. The concept also provided the band a palette of textures, sounds and inspiration from which to work. The idea forced the songs to fit together and as inspired as those influences were, The Acorn knew they had to expand and experiment this time around.

Unfortunately, for those only familiar with Glory Hope Mountain, No Ghost may be slightly unsettling. The 11-songs don’t fit any template or set idea, and broach more universal subjects like alienation and feeling lost, but the band seems to relish the freedom of a blank slate and runs in different directions without looking back. The explode out of the blocks with Cobbled From Dust, a song that builds on itself, gaining momentum and complexity with each strum and the rimshot percussion and fiery finger picking of Restoration exposes tribal folks influences (as does Bobcat Goldwraith before it adds horns and electric guitar work), but the bigger, brasher sounds are akin to those the band unleashed on their earlier EPs and the end result is more atmospheric and spacious. Blasts of guitar, electro undercurrents and a more expansive outlook are equally as important to the results as the tenderness the band executes so well.

Really, No Ghost is a seamless melding of the past and the present, only this time that history was taken from the band’s time capsule instead of Gloria’s. The singular idea used to define a vast scope has given way to a scattered, but enjoyable collection of exciting noises and varied pace. The powerful Slippery When Wet (especially when the violin grabs your ear) is as moving as any of the heartfelt sentiments we all regaled on their last effort, but without the touching back story will it be as warmly embraced? Ironically, for a band whose success is so indebted to a woman’s history, only time will tell. But make no mistake; No Ghost is not a step backwards. It’s a series of large, confident steps away from the safety of the path we expected the band to travel along.

The band is coming to Halifax - playing an intimate church show @ St. Matthew’s on September 15th and thanks to our good friends at Sonic, we have two sets of tickets to give away, as well as two copies of No Ghost. All you have to do is email us your info, or leave the pertinents in the comment section below. To whet your whistle, here’s the title track from the record, a thumping affair that careens down the tracks with an aggressive attitude and the fantastic Restoration. Enjoy.
