June, July and August usually finds Halifax flooded with great bands from out of town. The sun, the surf and the sappy(fest) all help bring people East, but in reality not having to make that drive during ice and snow storms is probably the biggest draw. This summer is no different (especially with a killer Sappy lineup and an Apollo Ghosts show in Hali) and to help with the invasion, Oscar’s Wild has a solid lineup of summer shows. We’ll be talking about the other shows closer to the time, but you can download some tracks from each act Drew’s bringing in here.
Tomorrow night showcases two electro acts from Montreal that share a label but have little else in common. I stumbled on to the Silly Kissers at last year’s M for Montreal fest and the boy/girl synth pop had the delegates dancing awkwardly, especially when Cadence Weapon came out and got his croon on. There’s a definite Chazz – you know, an 80’s Sheen – to the sounds, but their new LP shows that these lovesick youngsters have a lot going for them.
Grimes – aka Claire Boucher – exploded onto the blogs earlier this year when she dropped a tape full of dark electro noises. Her art may not be as immediate as some electronic work, but the more you listen to Geidi Primes the more you realize Claire’s songs are as essential to late night as Johnny Carson. Her beautiful hushed vocals move in and around interesting samples and electronics creating a hypnotic mood no matter how quirky or dark her arrangements get.
Throw in one of the best Halifax bands going – Duzheknew – and tomorrow night The Bus Stop Theatre is definitely the place to be. To win two tickets to the show, just send us an email – herohill AT gmail DOT COM – or leave your contact info in the comments section below. Contest closes at midnight tonight.
