Old School Mondays:: Classics 88-90 Vol. 1 Edition

Last night I did what I always do when I don’t have an idea for OSM: I went digging through my tapes to look for some inspiration. As always, I found plenty of possibles, but nothing stood out. I began looking through a bag of blank tapes that was also in the closet, and I found one that had “Classics 88-90 Vol. 1″ written on it. Sounded good to me, so I decided I’d give it a listen and post the first five songs on side A, kind of like one of those “name the next 5 songs that come up in shuffle mode” posts, but the mixtape version.

So I put on the Sony Mega Bass walkman I co-opted from a former co-worker a few years ago and had a listen. I certainly wasn’t disappointed - the songs were all very familiar ones, but they were indeed classics that I still enjoy to this day. The tape opens with what is likely one of my favorite hip hop songs ever (and I’m not alone here by a long shot), Microphone Fiend. That is followed up by Run’s House, a song that I don’t think most people would consider one of Run DMC’s bigger songs, but it has always been a favorite of mine, so I wasn’t surprised to hear it come on. After that, it’s the under the radar Golden Age favorite from Philly’s Three Times Dope, Funky Dividends. Another I never tire of hearing. Song number 4 is also a real classic, the H&O-sampling Say No Go from De La Soul. What can I say about that one, De La, a Hall & Oates sample? Close to perfection. We’ll finish up with a solid hill favorite that hill co-founder Shawn Lapaix would approve of, Gittin’ Funky from Kid ‘N Play.

So there you have it, five songs that I’ve posted before, but there’s a lot of awesome there, so hopefully no one will complain. In fact, they’d better not complain, because remember, real G’s rock tapes. Enjoy.

I still rock casettes too. Microphone Fiend is one of the best rap songs ever. Respect.
