Reviews:: The Wheat Pool Behind the Stars

Undoubtedly, one of the best sets I saw at NXNE was seeing Edmonton’s The Wheat Pool burn down the tiny stage of at The Dakota as part of the herohill/killbeat showcase. When the band broke into “Lefty” and “Nervous Bird”, my face hosted a smile as wide as The Grand Canyon, but the real highlight was the boys spirited take on one of my favorite Neil songs ever.

“Helpless” is a slow burner that hits me in the gut every time you hear it, and The Wheat Pool have made it something of a stable to their live shows over the last year or so. It’s also the core of their new, fan friendly EP, Behind the Stars. TWP gave us a sneak peak of one take last year as a part of our Best-of ’09 list, but this EP full of alternate versions is more than a casual throw-away. The stripped down take on “Evangeline” is worth the price of admission, as is “Edith Cavell”, a song that was a last second cut from the LP and originally written for a different band.

The core of the EP are the bookend version of Helpless, but in five songs, you get to see the evolution of a band and how songs are fleshed out (the final version of Evangeline adds a heavier sound and perfect atmospherics) or even flushed out to make a final product. You hear the heart of a band that beats like a kick drum and bleeds with the pride and history of great Canadian roots music. You hear boys that would rather share a drink on a porch with a stranger and sing songs they love instead of getting caught up in the bullshit. This digital only EP is a way for them to say thanks to the people that support them, but really, it’s us that should be saying thanks. The best $3.99 you’ll spend today.

I only got to check out one song of theirs before I had to cab it across town to catch a friend’s set, but they were great and I got a CD. Thanks for the Helpless MP3.
