Old School Mondays:: Miles Davis = Badass Edition

For reasons I won’t go into here, my father-in-law has been storing many of his surplus possessions at our house for a couple months. Amongst these possessions are three or four large wooden crates filled with vinyl records. Sounds like a pretty awesome scenario, I know, but the majority of the records are classical, which is perfectly fine, just not my bag. There are some pretty awesome treats though: some classic rock (Beatles, Eric Clapton, etc.), and some jazz - including that pretty amazing album right there on the left.

Admittedly, I know almost nothing about Miles Davis, but I’m fairly certain that an old dude, rocking leather and some kind of snakeskin jacket, while holding a mini machine gun on the cover of his album is pretty gangster. Come to find out, that album contains covers of Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time and Michael Jackson’s Human Nature, but never fear, if there’s one person alive that could make an instrumental jazz cover of Time After Time gangster, it’s that man right there. So then, after finding that album, and basking in it’s glowering warmth, I felt inspired to put together a Miles Davis OSM. But what does that mean exactly? Turns out, there are a lot fewer songs that sample Miles Davis than I would’ve thought.

Bitches Brew is a song I’d heard mentioned in a hip hop context before, but all I can find is Road Runner from Chi Ali, and the aggressive Heavy D tune You Can’t See What I Can See. But there were some nuggets to be found, including one of the best jazz-influenced Golden Age tracks, Gang Starr’s Manifest, which samples the famous A Night in Tunisia from Miles and Charlie Parker. That’s followed up by a great song from a classic album, Main Source’s Peace is Not the Word to Play, which samples Davis’ A Tribute to Jack Johnson. We’ll finish with a more modern song as far as OSM is concerned, Busta Rhymes’ Everything Remains Raw, which samples Bess You is My Woman Now. Good stuff right there, enjoy.
