As is the case for many music fans, I stumbled onto Kathryn Calder because of her talents as a collaborator. I think the first time I heard her was playing with Carl Newman on his solo tour @ Lee’s Palace, but since then I’ve seen her fill out melodies and hooks for The New Porns & The Immaculate Machine.

As talented as she was - and is - never did I think she’s have the confidence to step out on her own and deliver a single that starts with such delicate, tender charms and flawlessly jumps into boombastic explosions like she does on “Slip Away.” Restraint and regret oozes from the track and never has death sounded so alive.

If the rest of Are You My Mother? is as good, lazy critics like me will have to shy away from littering posts with who she’s played with and fill the voids with countless compliments and hyperbole.
