The dichotomy between urban and rural, big and small, fast and slow is one often explored by song writers, especially those craving the simple freedoms forgotten when consumed by the chaos and pace of bigger cities with bigger scenes. For Toronto’s Great Bloomers, the gap between both worlds appears to be an uncrossable chasm.

The band’s new 7″ – available for the first time when the band warms the stage for The Hold Steady @ HPX – was born from that ever increasing divide, both in content and sound. “Small Town Love” is an ode to the pure love that grows and lives in the towns any touring Canadian musician finds themselves in most nights. Horns and jangly guitar offer a gentle crescendo, but there is a purity about the song that you can’t ignore; one that feels humble in its origins.

But its the floating group vocals on the b-side, “Awake” that really help you escape. I know that the success of Fleet Foxes – and in Canadian circles, Yukon Blonde – have made AM radio harmonies common place, but their is nothing common about how the Ontario natives convey emotion over strings, subtle guitar and cymbal washes. This 7″ is only seven minutes long, but it helps us all “put away our busy thoughts”; that’s something we should all take a moment to appreciate and give thanks.
