Reviews:: Church of the Very Bright Lights Gang Crimes

It’s hard to fathom that such heavy subject matter could wash over you so warmly, but James Cullen (with support from Chris Riemer and Matt Flegel of Women fame) - aka Church of the Very Bright Lights - has taken the type of thoughts that triggers nightmares and crafted them into swaying, dreamlike melodies.

As warming guitar notes gently wash over you, it’s almost impossible to keep from closing your eyes and floating along in the gentle currents. You can feel actually feel your tension release as the piano and nylon string picks of “Politicking” plays out. But the record is a cohesive experience; instantly addictive, Cullen’s biggest strength as a song writer is how easily he triggers vivid emotions, but provides spacious melodies to let you explore how those emotions relate to you. Even as he offers intimate, personal glimpses into his own world, James makes sure to not only include the listener, but readily invite you to experience the songs in your own way.

Gang Crimes is minimal, eight songs that top out at just over twenty-five minutes, but moving experience. It’s obvious Cullen enjoys the same sonic palette as his backing band and their more well known project, but it’s as if the two styles meet in the middle. While Woman masks crisp pop songs with layers of distortion and reverb, Cullen opts for clarity of sound that is altered at precise and well thought out moments of chaos and clutter. It’s easy to see how Riemer’s keep time drums and Flegel’s bass lines fit into Cullen’s melodies so well - the echo-heavy chords of “Words” feel like they could have been lifted from either Woman record and the urgency of “Bone/Muscle” provides a well executed change of pace- and why Gang Crimes is more than just another well crafted, dreamlike state.
