Quick Hitters:: The Dirty Sample - Joshua’s Dreamixes

The last various artists-type release I talked about on the hill from Hand’Solo records was the Hokey Religions & Ancient Weapons (are no match for a good blaster) mixtape, and in that post I suggested that it would be a good vehicle to get you up to speed on what has been going on in Canadian indie hip hop. Well I could easily say the same about Joshua’s Dreamixes, a remix album from Vancouver producer The Dirty Sample.

Mr. Sample has been a busy man over the last few years, and in fact I posted on the precursor to this here album over a year ago, but he’s also had releases on Neferiu records and via his own Work Turkey Music web label. But this one here’s on Can-hop stalwart label Hand’Solo, and it features the Dirty Sample’s remix take on a number of recent hip hop songs from a wide ranging group of Canadian MC’s that manage to cover almost the entire country. As far as production style goes, the Dirty Sample uses a solid, traditionally hip hop base that manages to steer clear of cliched sounds to come off as a quality take on late 90′s underground production.

D-Sisive’s Brian Wilson is a good choice for the opener, as DS gives one of Derek’s most personal songs a very ominous treatment. I think Noah 23′s Yeah may be my favorite track on the album, as it features Moka Only, as well as a uptempo, future funk beat that induces much head-nodding. Birdapres could be one of the most underrated MC’s in Canada, so the slow-burning take on his None Missing is also a favorite. Eternia’s Many Many was on the Hand’Solo mix I mentioned earlier, but it’s a great tune and this horn-laced throwback is certainly welcome. I’ve actually posted Royce Birth’s Back In Stereo before, and he’s someone I’ve wanted to hear more from, so I was happy to see Dirty Sample felt the same way - this is another good one. After covering most of the rest of the country, it’s good to see Halifax represented at the end of the record with The Prestidigitator and The Route from Jesse Dangerously and Wordburglar respectively.

If you’re in the market for a huge helping of indie Canadian hip hop, I can’t think of a better source right now than Joshua’s Dreamixes, so go and check it for yourself.
