Me Fault ’10:: Common Grackle

Common Grackle - The Great Depression

I posted a Common Grackle video a couple months ago, and even then I said I should have already had a post up for the record. Oh well, when you post things as haphazardly as we tend to around here (I’ll lump the Ack in with me, even though I know he’s more on the ball), you tend to have a bunch of shoulda’s & coulda’s on the posting tip when you get to the end of a year. Well then, hopefully this brief post encourages someone to go check out The Great Depression if it’s new to them, as I think it’s a great record. Plus, looking it again in large format, I realize that I quite like this album’s artwork for some reason (what I assume to be a grackle smoking a butt & packing a 12 gauge? Strangely appealing), so there’s another win.

As a quick recap, I’ll replay the blurb I used in that video hits post: Common Grackle is the duo of prairie producer Factor and Guelph’s hip hop-inspired folkster Gregory Pepper. Their debut record, The Great Depression, came out early this summer. I really should have had a post up on it by now, as it’s a really interesting album, but this video for the title track has been waiting to make a Video Hits appearance, and so I didn’t want to save it any longer. Their label boss Ceschi Ramos makes an appearance, as does a Factor-driven El Camino, which you would think should cancel out any depression one might have.

On top of that, I came across the Southern Souls version of At the Grindcore Show this morning, and while the original version was amusing, but not my favorite song from the album, this one gives me the warm & fuzzies really. I’d say my favorite song either comes down to the Kool Keith(Poppa Large, big shot on the avant-garde-hop coast!) featuring opener Thank God It’s Monday or the peppy All The Pawns. But there’s good songs throughout on this one, so if you think some indie folk-pop with a hip hop bent might be up your alley, hit this one up.
