I was going to take a brief siesta until the New Year and then focus on new records, but I realized I missed a couple good local releases that deserve some attention. The first is the free download / split cassette from Bad Vibrations and Bloodhouse, a “holidaze” treat if you will.
KC Spidle is no stranger to Halifax’s scene, but this power packed punk rocking three-piece is my favorite of his musical persona. Catchy as hell, heavy guitar rock; the soundtrack for basement make out sessions, draining every drop out of the 5 bucks you have for gas and french inhaling. Basically, sonic explosions like “Conscience” and “Aurora” and sludgy, noise collages like “Face The World” are the foundations that Halifax built it’s musical name upon, and this smoking split cassette proves Spidle, Evan and Meg are willing and more than able to keep that torch burning.
For Bloodhouse, things aren’t quite so pleasantly nostalgic. The distortion and pace are turned up and any blissful high school memory you had from the Bad Vibrations songs is replaced with the unease hidden at the back of the school. Make no mistake however, these songs hit with a focus that is unmistakable. It ain’t comforting, it ain’t getting to second base for the first time, but it’s f&cking good. Grab these gems now, but shell out $6 bucks and grab the tape too.
