Rap-Sack Backpack:: CBC R3 Podcast Edition Ep. 3

Maestro Portrait by Kagan McLeod

‘Aight then, if you’ve been paying attention to the hill over the last week, you’ve heard that the folks at CBC R3 used a playlist of Canadian hip hop that we created as their ehList of the day early last week. We also did a podcast with CBC’s Lana Gay, which they posted up last night, and I have to say, it’s pretty excellent. And I’m not just saying that because the Ack and I are on it, it’s an entertaining listen with some top-shelf Canadian hip hop. Just check the playlist and you’ll see the kind of Canadian quality we’re dealing with. But we ARE on it, which is kind of awesome!

Well then, I’ve already done 2 previous posts talking about the first 8 songs on the playlist, so here’s the last 2.

Muneshine - Gotta Feeling f. D-Sisive & Shad
Although he may not stay that way for long, Muneshine is a fairly underrated MC and producer from Toronto (not originally, he’s a prairie boy originally I think?), but he’s plenty talented on the beats and the raps, and this song is an excellent example of that. It was also a good way to have Shad & D-Sisive on the list - although I’m a huge fan of both, they are fairly well known in Canadian music circles right now, so I thought I’d dig a little deeper and showcase some other folks. This song also has a great video too, which is a definite bonus. It is, as they say, a big tune.

J-Bru, Jay Bizzy & Ghettosocks - Help, I Been Robbed (Jorun Remix)
A good mixtape (and/or playlist I guess) should go out with a bang, and in this case we take it Back 2 Fax (MCJ & Cool G style) with an awesome posse cut featuring J-Bru, Jay Bizzy & Ghettosocks. I pretty much just love this song, plenty of fun, and I love the beat especially the Jorun remix - Jo’s a DJ, Producer & all around legendary Halifax hip hop figure, so I was happy to get him factored into the playlist as well. The song also has a great video, so check it below.

So then, there’s the end of our R3 Canadian hip hop playlist, and don’t forget to check out the podcast where you can hear all the songs, plus some witty(ish) banter. However, I can’t leave this topic without posting one more song. The podcast series was called “My Definition”, which I have to assume is a nod to legendary Canadian duo The Dream Warriors, and their essential jam My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style. Well The Dream warriors don’t seem to have an R3 page, so no one could have added them to their playlist - someone get Alanis on the horn, cause that’s a little ironic, no? Well then, we’ll fix this by posting that song and it’s art-tastic video. Enjoy!
