Contest:: Win Flecton Big Sky Homage covers record (5 copies)

Kelp Records stalwart Flecton Big Sky has been dragging his knuckles since 1969. Outside of possessing a catchy slogan, Miche Jetté is an artist fixated on breaking down sounds to their core elements. Empty space and energy, his songs are pure and often snapshots of moments that burn out almost as soon as the recording stops.

That’s why his covers project - Homage - is so interesting to me. Instead of simply banging out some covers to keep writing, Flecton Big Sky took a more analytical approach. The same core elements start the process, but the reaction used to create the end product is completely unique and shows the thought Miche put into the effort.

These aren’t ironic covers of Outkast or Katy Perry. Moving from former label mates The Acorn to under appreciated Canadian songwriting genius Mike Feuerstack (Snailhouse), FBS uses his musical flux capacitor to take us back and forth to musical moments that grabbed his attention in the last 30 years. The Stones, Queen, Warren Zevon, The Dead… Miche pays respect to some of the biggest names but also shows that modern artists like the virtually unknown Black Boot Trio and cult favorites, Califone equally influence his work (his stirring take on “Funeral Singers” might be my favorite track on the record). That or how he strips any of the cheese and big country sound from the surprisingly heartbreaking Dwight Yoakam track, “Guitars, Cadillacs.”

So here’s the deal. Flecton Big Sky has sent over [5] copies of the record for us to give away. The cover art is actually taped to the jacket, with a personal message from the man. It’s something you will want to own, first for the music and second for the call for inspiration. Just keep writing. Just keep playing. Just keep singing. In the end, art will take shape and grow. To enter, just send over your email address [herohill AT gmail DOT COM] or leave your details in the comments section below. As a special treat, Miche said he’s also mail you his last record. Win win.

It’s hard to discuss something so personal through my filter, so here’s a simple, honest quote from Miche about the hows and whys:

Homage. a ten song collection of cover songs i recorded this past year. i really enjoyed myself and it was nice to take a break from working on my own material. there are other covers recorded but they did not make the cut and that was usually because i wasn’t bringing anything to the song, nothing to make it mine. i feel that i got under the skins of the ten songs that make up Homage.

“Konichiwa!”
And, trans-Pacific salutations from lovely Nagano prefecture, Japan. Well, as Ottawa born and bred ex-patriates living over here in Japan, we’d truly love the opportunity to give Kelp Records, and Miche Jetté (Flecton Big Sky) some North East Asian exposure. Most regrettably, however, we don’t actually know any Japanese indie booking agents, although we do know the owners of an independent-minded art gallery, who dabble as indie promoters. And, perhaps more to the point, we know a heaping helping of turntable stylists, and on-air personalities!
