Me Fault ’10:: Pete Samples - Bekonscot

Oh, I tried to have all posts done for the records I wanted to cover in 2010 done by Jan. 1st, so’s to be able to start ’11 with a clean slate, but un-surprisingly, that didn’t happen. C’est la vie though, as I’d rather do it late than not post on a record I enjoy. One such record being Pete Samples’ latest release, Bekonscot. In a good news/bad news twist we see quite a bit these days, Pete is offering the album as a free download, but unfortunately it’ll be his last release under the Pete Samples moniker.

You see, in another shocking twist, there is no Pete Samples, instead, that name is the aka of Canadian (the wiki says MTL and WPG) multi-instrumentalist Brent Freedman. Pete’s wiki lists Bekonscot as his 6th release, which makes me a little sad that I’ve missed out on his work, but luckily there are free d/l’s aplenty on his site to get caught up.

As for Bekonscot, it managed to lure me in despite not being at all the kind of sound that is in my wheelhouse. It is full of floaty sounds - chimes, strings, glockenspiel-y tinkles, handclaps, and airy, detached vocals, but there’s something warming & comforting about it for me. And when he picks up the pace, on songs like the title track, the percussion-filled Ghost Town Winds, or the delightful Bobby Raindrop, the songs end up completely in my wheelhouse.

Anyhoo, if you’re looking for something to help you decompress after the holiday season, and aren’t averse to a couple 10 or 20 minute songs up in the mix, go and grab Pete Samples’ last release. I’m glad I did, and I’m looking forward to what comes next from Pete/Brent.
