Tour Dates:: DL Incognito & Len Bowen

DL Incoginto & Len Bowen Tour

I know I’ve refferd to myself as the unfrozen caveman rap guy in regards to other music, but that also holds true for hip hop itself. I mean, I’m the first person to admit that the internet has been a huge plus for hip hop, and music overall, but oftentimes when I see the barrage of mixtapes and video freestyles from that particular days “hot” rapper, I end up feeling infinitely older than the geezerly 36 that I happen to be.

That said, there’s plenty of hip hop nourishment out there, for even the most traditional of hip hop souls, and you need not look outside our borders to find it. In fact, if you are in the Western Portion of Canada, you’ll be able to get your fix live and uncut, and veteran Canadian MC’s DL Incognito and Len Bowen head out that way for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next month.

If you’re at all up on Canadian hip hop at all, I’m hoping you’re up on DL Incognito already, but if you need a DL primer, you might check out my rather effusive review of DL’s last record, A Captured Moment in Time. I called him one of Canada’s best MC’s and justified it thusly:

The Ottawa native isn’t flashy, doesn’t need any gimmicks, and won’t try and blind you with super-deep MC science – he’s simply an MC with a perfect combination of skills (voice, flow, lyrics, beats) that make him tremendously listenable.

Going back and listening to DL’s album again, I still like it just as much, so I’ve been waiting for his new one, Someday is Less Than a Second Away, which has been pushed out to a release later this year, but there’s a little taste from the album below in the form of A Little Like This, and it’s good stuff, good ol’ fashioned boom-bappery that’s stick-to-your-ribs good.

Someone else who knows their way around that kind of boom-bappery is Winnipeg’s Len Bowen, who recently released a very solid EP on Urbnet records. Len made an appearance on our Manitoba mixtape, and since that point we’ve been waiting for more music from him. Well Len’s Long Story Short doesn’t disappoint, it’s 7 tracks of Len bringing his laid back style to tales of growing up in the ‘Peg and the all to familiar struggles faced by those making hip hop in Canada. Throw in solid production and appearances from DL & Grand Analog, and you’ve got a winner. So go check out Len’s EP, or see the fellas next months if you’re out west.
