Well here’s the first Video Hits of 2011, and it feels as crispy and clean as that fairly large dumping of snow we had out here last night looked after it had just come down. So how to mark the occasion then? Let’s do something big, how about the biggest Canadian bands we could think of? Seems like a lot of work though, how about big CDN bands that have released videos, the links for which then ended up in our inbox, in the last month or so? Works for me.
The New Pornographers video for Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk was done as a partnership with Oxfam as a attempt to make sure folks weren’t forgetting that many folks in the Gulf-Coast region still have a struggle ahead of them to recover from the impact of last year’s oil spill in the gulf. So watch the video below, if you haven’t seen it yet – it does a decent job putting the actual impact of the spill on real people there in focus, and if you’re interested in more info on the spill and the recovery effort to date, check Oxfam’s coverage for a start.
Let’s segue ever so smoothly from one oil-related video to another, as Broken Social Scene’s clip for Texico Bitches features a couple dudes engaging in some gangland oil wrestling. I don’t mind telling you that I pretty much love this song, I also don’t mind telling you that I really have no idea what is going on in the video. I assume the song & vid is some kind of commentary on the greediness of oil companies, but who knows. For the sake of the dude that gets a streaming torrent of the stuff in his gullet, I’m hoping they didn’t use actual oil. There’s also a nice remix of that song below btw.
Can we find a way to segue into The Dears new video Blood as well? Sure, after all, aren’t folks always railing at governments and companies about trading blood for oil? Or something? Yeah, that’s a stretch, but Blood is a rather rocking new tune from Murray Lightburn and his re-vamped crew (is former Thrush Hermit-ian Rob Benvie not in The Dears again? I don’t see him here, or do I?) shot in Mexico City, so it works well on it’s own merits. Enjoy.
