MC Lyte was, is, and likely always will be my favorite female MC. Certainly there have been plenty of other amazing female MC’s down through the years, but Lyte is the tops for me. Considering how hard it was for female MC’s to make their mark in 1988 when Lyte dropped her debut, and add the fact she was only like 17 at the time to boot, and it’s all very impressive. So when a little bit of Google-age revealed I’d never posted on Lyte As A Rock before, I figured I should fix that.

So consider it fixed. I’d certainly suggest you read through Lyte’s Wiki if you’re interested in the full story on someone from the old school (either of male or female) who has had one of the more successfull careers while maintaining their integtrity. But Lyte’s story is a classic: her father starts a record label (First Priority) to release records from his kids, first his from his sons (Audio Two), and then from his daughter Lana (aka Lyte).

But this is one of those “hurray for nepotism!” cases, as Lyte just happened to be an excellent MC. Her flow, confidence, and writing ability were top-shelf for that era. Plus she had an admirable knack for the storytelling rhyme, as her first song, I Cram To Understand U ably demonstrated. She also wasn’t afraid to get raw should anyone decide to step to her or her First Priority family, and she pretty much ended Hurby Lub-Bug protege Antoinette’s career with the rugged 10% Dis. But if we’re talking about about Lyte As A Rock, the winner is Paper Thin, easily one of my favorite old school jams, with a killer beat and Lyte’s dismantling of a wannabe player, it still sounds awesome to me today (the video intro hasn’t aged as well “You got this bad Jetta sitting here and you want to take the Subway?!?!”, but it makes me like it even more). Enjoy.
