Carmen Townsend - Waitin' And Seein'

I’m rather impressed with Carmen Townsend’s new record, Waitin’ And Seein’, so much so that I feel compelled to skip my beloved start-of-post waffle and tell you exactly why I like her album: she has made pretty much precisely the album I wish every female sing-songwriter with a big voice would make. I mean sure, there’s something to be said for subtlety and delicate song-craft, but sometimes the best course of action is to pick up your big ol’ guitar and sing your heart out.

I’ve been a fan of Carmen’s since I first saw the dimuinutive Cape Bretoner play at something called the Max Trax ECMA showcase some 4 or 5 years ago (I was impressed enough to label her the “act of the evening”). So I had my eye out for new music from the Caper with the flame-red hair and the huge guitar/voice combo, but none was forthcoming, until now. And right from the start, with the hungry howl of the album’s opener River Rat, it’s clear that Carmen is rather enthusiastic to make up for lost Rock & Roll time.

Waitin’ And Seein’ is billed as a solo record, but from the big sound present on many of the tracks, it’s pretty clear Carmen’s band (previously The Shakey Deals?) played a big part in this record. The album has a number of fuzzy rockers on it, like the aforementioned River Rat, Hands and Mouths, Without My Love, and the wide-open, jammy Open Sea, but even some of the more melodic songs that start out softly, like Start All Over and Waitin’ and Seein’ eventually bring in the heavy guitars. And all of them find Carmen giving her rather impressive voice a workout, going from big to small, sharp to sweet, melodic to razor-sharp at the drop of a dime.

Now as I say, Carmen’s album is a perfect fit for my wheelhouse, and I realize that others would have a different view, but I’d be surprised if there wasn’t at least something for everyone on Waitin’ And Seein’. In the end, it’s just a great, almost traditional Rock & Roll record so I’d encourage you to give it a listen. Or better yet, see Carmen live - she’s currently on tour doing a solo set to open for Heart(!), but I have no doubt she’ll be doing her own touring soon enough.
