With so much of the newest indie music being deliberately subtle and subdued, there’s something refreshing about turning up the amps, pounding the bejesus out of the drumkit, and unleashing the gritty guitar riffs. What is it about being in a two piece that so often results in this kind of sound on such a regular basis? Japandroids, PS I Love You, The Pack AD, and Hot Kid are just a few recent Canadian examples I can think of off the dome, but I’m sure there are tons of others.
Well, if Haligonian husband & wife team Cursed Arrows weren’t on that list before, their upcoming release, The Madness of Crowds will certainly confirm their place. The album drops April 5th, but you can get a taste of what’s in store from the title track below. Pounding drums, check. Dirty guitar riffs, check again. Mix in some deceptively melodic vocals and you’ve got a winner in my humble. Keep an eye on the hill for a full review of this one in the coming weeks.
