Quick Hitters:: Southern Shores

Seriously Winter, you need to get to steppin’. Scraping the car as the curtain starts to close on March is not cool. Scarves should already be packed. Toques should be something bad sitcoms reference when they make fun of Canadians, not something I still have to put on when I leave the house in the morning. We should be overrun by those idiots wearing shorts and tossing the disc or kickin’ the sack in the quad at King’s.

Thankfully, the warming textures of the Halifax duo Southern Shores are determined to melt the stubborn snow that refuses to give ground. Fusing samples with sun-kissed warmth, island percussion, washed out programming, and keyboards, their music seems more like a dream than reality. These songs are an escape that seems impossible. “Grande Comore” could just as well be called Zihuatanejo as it’s more about the utopia Andy Dufresene held onto for hope than the sweltering climate itself. It’s also incredibly infectious and each song the duo throw up on the site is better than the one before it.

Southern Shores will play their first show here in Halifax on April 29th, and rumor has it they are challenging Rich Aucoin’s reign of projection screen syncing (or at least strengthening Halifax’s claim to the throne). Either way, these tropical collages are finally going to push Winter out of Halifax and help summer finally start.
