Rap-Sack Backpack:: Shad, Saukrates, 4th Pyramid & More

Maestro Portrait by Kagan McLeodIt’s been a few months since we’ve posted an edition of the Rap-Sack Backpack, our Maestro-inspired rundown of the recent Canadian hip hop singles, videos and other such things that we’re sent. But what better time for the Rap-Sack Backpack to return than on the day after CBC Radio’s Hip Hop Summit show, which featured performances from a who’s who of Canadian Hip Hop over the last 20+ years, including a show-closing rendition of Let Your Backbone Slide, from Maestro himself, who was apparently wearing his patented black Tuxedo!

That’s rather awesome, and I hear video of it soon will be surfacing soon on the CBC, so you can bet we’ll be linking that via the Twitter when it does. Also performing last night was the amazing Shad, who just so happens to be a newly-minted Juno owner, having received the Best Rap Recording award on Saturday night (At a non-televised event of course. Boooooo for you, Junos. Even when you do something right, with a great group of hip hop nominees, you still manage to cock it up with no tv-shown hip hop award or performance on your big show. And yeah, anyone mentioning the Down With Webster show opener can see their way outta here). Being the gentleman that he is, Shad has already released a thank you song, with assistance on the beat from Skratch Bastid, and in a testament to Shad’s skill and overall competence as an artist, even a quickly composed theme song from him is excellent.

Also performing at the Summit show was the much-respected Saukrates, who I’m a huge fan of, and since we could always use more Bigg Soxx on the hill, I’m putting up the remix version (featuring D-Sisive, natch) of Wednesday, which Soxx put out last year.

Here are the things I know about 4th Pyramid: He is from Toronto, he has one song that features a rather 70′s funky beat and a cameo from Greg Nice, and another called Carlton Banks. Is that enough to get himself posted on the hill? You betcha. Will I be looking more into what 4th Pyramid is all about? Yes indeed.

Vancouver production duo Superhero sent us their recent remix of Kyprios’ track Go Away, and because I like the dark, drum & bass-y feel of the track, and also because we’ve been on a Sweatshop Union kick of late (Kyprios being a former member), we’re going to post it up like it was a tiny old dude at the Chocolate Lake Rec Centre.

Last but not least, we bring news of a collaborative project between Halifax MC’s Quake & Kayo called The Search. I’ve talked up Quake on the hill before, but St. Lucia native Kayo Guevarra was new to me, and I must say, I’m impressed with him (I’m not the only one, I believe he’s working on an album with Classified right now). Anyway, The Search is available via Bandcamp right now, so if you like what you hear in the song & video below, go check out the full album.
