Reviews:: Leeroy Stagger Little Victories

If Leeroy Stagger spent the last year or so taking stock of his life and looking for the things that help him get up in the morning, you wonder if the search has been futile. Without question, Leeroy’s sixth record - Little Victories - is one full of sadness. There are precious few moments of hope (the heartfelt “I Believe in Love”), and for the most part this is thirteen songs full of reflection as life tears slowly at the seams. These are more than broken hearts and failing dreams. Stagger questions if love even exists, music as a career and if happiness is a myth.

What makes Little Victories so engrossing is how beautifully Stagger packages that melancholy. Leeroy and his band (The Wildflowers) are completely in sync no matter what style they explore, and with help from producer Kevin Kane the arrangements sparkle. From the first notes of “Everyones On Drugs”, you are rewarded with crisp sounds alongside the gritty vocals, heartache and depression. It’s easy to imagine fans of early Josh Rouse or Rhett Miller smiling through the sadness but the band showscases their skill with with hints of blues, tasteful slide, horns & organ and sparse acoustic riffs.

As a music fan, Little Victories also plays like a love letter to some of the greats. It’s hard to ignore the nod to Ryan Adams and Steve Earle on “Hardtown”, the tip of the cap to Lennon he delivers on the closing piano ballad, “Love Will Let You Down” or even the classic rock punch you get from the guitars on “Waste of a Wedding.” And that’s exactly what makes this record. From start to finish, it feels like Stagger put every ounce of himself into each melodies and each couplet. It’s sad but it’s honest, which is something lacking from music and life these days.
