Technically a new EP, this collection of tracks from herohill’s favorite half-marathon running musician was recorded at The House of Miracles over the last four years and finds Andrew Vincent and some of his closest friends simply having fun. With help from Jon Bartlett, Jim Bryson, Jenny “Omnichord” Mitchell, Andy Swan and Shayne Cox, AV has ripped off 6 pop nuggets that charm as much as they rock.
If history repeats itself, Vincent’s work will remain a treat for his fans and largely ignored by the masses; the straight ahead, middle ground between muscular riffs and bubble gum pop songs don’t hit on enough trends to blow up. Vincent has fine tuned his smooth delivery over top of heavy plucked bass lines, crunching guitar riffs and whirling synths and it maybe not be recorded to purposely sound shitty, filled with stupid catch phrases (SWAG!) or the endless blasts of electro-noise needed to skyrocket to the top of The Hype Machine, but these are exactly the type of songs that I reach for on any sunny day or when I head anywhere in the car.
The highlight to total recorded minutes ratio on Keep It That Way is ridiculous. Coming in under 20-minutes, AV must have genetically modified the record to pack in this much goodness. The elastic band bass line and keys board outro of the radio ready “Diane” and the 50’s rock “London Glory” show the influences that inspire AV, but with the chunky 90’s rocking closer, “Needs Improvement” and the stellar 1-2 of “Ambassador Bridge” and “Keep it That Way” keep this EP from becoming a time capsule. Ambassador Bridge explodes out of the block, like a more subdued “Tunnel of Love” that flows perfectly into the quirky, synth laced duo with Omnichord. Less than five minutes in and you are hooked, but the remaining fifteen never let your interest waiver. He even touches your heart strings on a surprisingly sad ballad.
Bottom line, you could probably spend your time worrying about reasons why this EP isn’t cool. I’ll simply turn it up and keep playing it over and over and over again.
