I’m not even sure how I settled on Redman’s sophomore effort for today’s OSM, but I think it’s because I was combing through the old cassettes looking for something I’d never posted before, and Dare Iz A Darkside caused me to act like DMC and/or Run and pause. The pausing was simply due to the fact that I couldn’t really remember much about the album until I began listening to it this AM and some familiarity started returning.
Anyhoo, I’m roughly 99% certain I’ve never posted anything from Dare Iz A Darkside, so it fit the bill. It’s also a bit surprising as I’ve always been a fairly large Redman fan, hoping on the Reggie Noble bandwagon after being introduced to him early through EPMD (he pops up twice on one of my favorite albums, Business As Usual – “Redman, ready to rock rough rhymes” – and of course after “Head Banger” it was over, everyone was waiting for the Red solo album).
I own physical copies of Red’s first 4 or 5 albums and so I would have thought his second would have appeared on the hill by now, but then again, listening to it again today, it’s not that surprising. It’s dirty, and it bumps hard as hell, but it’s a pretty intentionally “underground” type of record without any obvious singles on it. Seems like a bold move, considering the “Time 4 Sum Aksion”-led Whut? Thee Album seemed to give him some exposure amongst casual rap fans, but I don’t think Red cared much, as a quick Googleage of that album finds Red saying things like “I was doing a lot of drugs on Dare Iz A Darkside.” or “I was so lost, I was so fucked up during that album”. When you consider Redman appears to be weeded 99% of the time, him saying “I was doing a lot of drugs” must mean A LOT of drugs.
So then, I think we can consider this OSM a mission accomplished as I was looking for some up-posted material, and this fits the bill. We’ll wrap things up here by posting the two singles from the album: “Rockafella” and “Can’t Wait”, as well as the remix version of Rockafella. After listening to the album this AM, I recalled cranking Can’t Wait in my crappy car stereo and then laughing when Red broke down the intricacies of his Bruce Lee/Fuji couplet at the end. Good stuff right there, so enjoy.
