I titled this post just assuming anyone landing on it would know that those are A Tribe Called Quest song titles, but for those who don’t know: those are A Tribe Called Quest song titles. Ha! Now that the informative portion of this post is out of the way, we’ll get to what I do best, the rambling. Last week I had the enjoyable experience of discovering that I own a Tribe 12″ that I forgot all about. It is this “Jive Classic Series” 12″ with original and remix versions of Scenario, Oh My God, and Jazz (We’Ve Got).
My vinyl collection is extremely modest, so you’d think I’d have remembered having this, but on the other hand, I’m 99% positive I once owned a 12″ of NWA’s Express Yourself (I always loved the cover art on this one) which I can no longer find, so perhaps some kind of cosmic vinyl switcharoo occurred at some point. That seems unlikely though, as Scenario and Oh My God are two of my favorite Tribe songs, so it’s likely I did purchase this one in Toronto. And speaking of Scenario, the remix version for it featured on this 12″ contains the infamous lead-off verse from Kid Hood, who was apparently a homeless kid who hung around near the studio, and who proceeds to rip his verse in Nas/Live at the BBQ-like fashion, but was tragically killed three days after this recording was done.
So anyhoo, un-expected ATCQ treats are always good treats, and so I wanted to share this goodness with all of you. So go to your record collection right now and you’ll see that I’ve David Blaine’d a copy of this 12″ into your collection as well!
Alas, I wish I could make that happen, and it will, once the hill makes the Ack all those blog-millions we’ve been waiting on. You can expect your record by approximately 2086. For now, I have hunted down a sampling of the songs on the 12″: the aforementioned “7 MC’s” remix and the original version of Scenario, the original and remix versions of Oh My God (check the video below, the convenience store clerk is easily one of my favorite random dudes in a rap video “whose video, can I be in it please? It’s me in the place to be!”), and the “re-recording” of Jazz (We’ve Got). A day with plenty of Tribe is a good day, so enjoy!
