Quick Hitters:: Canadian Winter

Canadian Winter

I must give credit where it’s due, and so I’ll just say right off the bat that I was introduced to Hamilton’s Canadian Winter via The Come Up show, so a shout out/big up is due to Kara-Lis and the folks over there. As I intend to pursue a review copy of CW’s debut full-length Just Wait Till February, I’m going to keep this post brief. However, The Come Up Show folks have posted both the group’s debut (& free!) EP Bundle Up EP + Scattered Flurries as well as debuted the band’s video for City Lights, so head over there for more Canadian Winter content.

I will, however, leave you with a few reasons to check out these guys. First off, their album is a rough concept album that examines frontman Kobi’s initial experiences in our beloved-ly frigid country after moving here from the UK. Don’t know about you, but as a lifelong resident, I always find other people’s take on Canada interesting, so the concept intrigues me. Secondly, after a brief listen, I’ll say that Canadian Winter sounds really good. Musically, they seem to be a mix of traditional, electronic hip hop production and live instrumentation, and it’s worth noting that Kobi raps with a British accent.

Sure, that might not matter to some, but for me, a guy who has been a fan of Derek B, Dana Dane (even though he’s a huge FAKER - still not oever that), Slick Rick, and even The Rebel M.C., it’s a bit of a big deal. In the past, it has made me an early adopter of folks like Dizzee Razcal & Mike Skinner, and so if you tell me there’s a new Canadian group being fronted by a British-accented MC, I’m pretty much in no questions asked. It does help though that Canadian Winter appear to have a solid record on their hands as well, so check them out.
